"Building Connections: Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Knowledge Sharing" Understanding plumbing and mechanical codes is vital for construction management students, as it ensures that construction projects are safe, efficient, and compliant with legal requirements. It also helps in avoiding costly delays and rework due to code violations. The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials has been the ‘go to’ Code Authority on both Plumbing and Mechanical Code (IAPMO) for almost a Century. This session will provide you an opportunity to learn more about who IAPMO is and what we do. We’ll review and share an assignment we’ve developed for your students that can be added to your curriculum and potentially partner together to continue to enhance how plumbing and mechanical systems are taught at your university. |

The Creation and Subsequent Success of Developing a Construction Risk Identification and Analysis Course for Undergraduates Industry partners have identified that a basic understanding of business risk, beyond safety and jobsite hazard analysis is beneficial to the success of young professionals. It's been proffered, however, that graduates from many Construction Management programs are technically sound, but that critical analysis of performance risk is deficient. The course examines risk management planning, identifying, qualifying, quantifying, responding to and monitoring of uncertainties in the construction process. The course utilizes industry tools to understand how increasing or decreasing the probability and impact of certain risks and potential opportunities can affect the success of the project and ultimately the firm. Through teaching this course over the past three years, students have gained an understanding of the broad aspect of business risk inherent in the construction industry; are able to identify the stakeholders of a project together with their tolerances for uncertainty; perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of these risks with regard to severity levels; and utilize tools to manage risk through all stages of a project. |

Two STEM Research Projects at Cal Poly Pomona This presentation will introduce two NSF-funded projects with a total of $2.5M to Cal Poly, Pomona. The first project (NSF BRIDGE, $1M) is about the transfer student’s success at 4-year institution. The State of California, which has the largest four-year public university system in the United States, does not have an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) in Engineering. Therefore, the majority of engineering students who transfer from community colleges do not take lower-division engineering courses and, on average, transfer students must attend two-to-three additional years of college to obtain a degree at four-year institutions. To close the gaps in engineering education for transfer students and to increase their success, the research team will focus on a “transfer-ready” curriculum and a faculty learning community. The second project (NSF CERTAIN, $1.5M) is to increase the representation of high academic achieving, low-income students and URM students to attain degrees in the construction engineering and management program. A total of $900,000 in scholarships will be provided to eligible/selected low-income students at CPP, and this project will demonstrate the impact of additional financial assistance for their academic and career success. |

What can be some integration points for Lean in the Design and Construction Curriculum? Lean has been practiced by the design and construction industry for over a decade, still, it is not a part of the mainstream curriculum, aligned to the various student learning outcomes. This is the first gap. Additionally, many design and construction organizations, are members of the Lean Construction Institute community and represent the methods and practices that form the corresponding body of knowledge for the Lean implementation. This community produces many resources that can be used for Lean education and training in universities. However, academia is not always aware of the learning resources being produced by the LCI member community. This is the second gap. Therefore, this project aimed to identify integration points for Lean in the design and construction curriculum by mapping the existing LCI’s learning resources to their respective student learning outcomes (SLOs). This would allow the graduating students, i.e. our future design and construction workforce to be ready to integrate Lean Project Delivery into their professional practices. This presentation will discuss how to address both gaps, various content maps were developed, showing the integration points for Lean and corresponding future opportunities. The Lean Construction Institute funds this study. |

An Exploration of Integrated Digital Delivery: Evidenced-Based Best Practices The emergence of Integrated Digital Delivery (IDD) indicates a transformative shift in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry towards profound digitization, advocating for enhanced project outcomes spanning dimensions of time, cost, quality, safety, and labor optimization. While the potential of IDD to innovate traditional project delivery mechanisms is pronounced, it concurrently introduces multifaceted challenges, such as the transition from traditional, fragmented project management methodologies to a more integrated IDD approach, with implications for data interoperability, communication processes, and workforce development. Recognizing the pivotal role of construction educators, this study examines the effective practices for integrated digital delivery by drawing insights from multiple case studies and emphasizes the urgency of adapting curricula to ensure that the next generation of professionals is equipped with the skills essential for IDD success. Through a comprehensive literature review and case studies of IDD using FulcrumHQ empowered by Building Information Modeling (BIM), Machine Learning (ML), and Artificial Intelligence (AI), this study not only highlights the challenges and best practices associated with IDD but also underscores the critical need for educational institutions to play a proactive role in workforce development in the digital age. |
